Chewing gum is a snack spread all over the world. For the past many years, it has been so accessible to people in the commodity market that it has been forgotten. It is unconsciously considered a commonly available commodity, nothing interesting. But the opposite is true. The health benefits of chewing gum are huge considering the price and size. When I started to deal with chewing gum, I was surprised that it has been around for more than 100 years. I thought it was discovered sometime around WW2. In fact, it is quite different. Chewing gum and its equivalent have been around for several thousand years.

Our ancestors were aware of the benefits of chewing gum

Our ancestors knew well that chewing something in their mouths had benefits for them. If I talk about the advantages relating to the period several thousand years ago, it is clear to me that the main advantages were bridging the time when you did not have enough food. By chewing something in your mouth, you can overcome many obstacles. In particular, this will take care of your starving stomach and lack of fluids. Chewing diverts your attention, which stimulates and calms you down, and you can concentrate better on what you want to achieve. By chewing, you increase the flow of saliva, which makes your body thrive better. You prevent problems with gums, teeth and common respiratory diseases. Our predecessors were certainly fully aware of this. Of course, the same benefits remain.

What was being chewed

A few thousand years ago, everything that you could take from nature was chewed. Tar from birch bark, natural chicle tree gum, mastic gum from the resin of the mastic tree, ginseng roots, sap from sugar pine and spruce, tobacco leaves, etc. were chewed.

What is being chewed today

It’s different nowadays. There are a large number of chewing gums with a synthetic base (rubber base) on the market. The base of the chewing gum is not natural, but artificially made with improved properties. This is the difference between the chewing gum or similar chewing gum of our predecessors, who chewed gum or substances of purely natural origin. But people value their health and are starting to notice controversial chewing gum ingredients. This raises interest in healthy chewing gum that does not contain some harmful substances. And this demand in turn creates a supply, i.e. a return to the original recipes and the return to the use of natural substances or a natural rubber base in chewing gum.

Basic types of chewing gum

1) Chewing gum with sugar

For the past 50-60 years, sugar gum has been a common item in stores around the world. This remains the case, but over the past 20 years there has been a change in gum ingredients due to increasing pressure and interest in sugar-free gum. Based on demonstrable results of studies that show/show clearly that sugar-free gum is more beneficial for people than gum with refined sugar. At the moment, there is rather a decrease in interest in chewing gum with sugar.

2) Chewing gum without sugar

Some of you may not have even noticed that sugar-free gum is already available on the gum market, right? It is so. Manufacturers have adapted to the pressure of demand and replaced refined sugar mostly with substitute sweeteners. Yes, there is still a large supply of chewing gum with sugar. You can already order large quantities in stores and e-shops.

Sugar has been replaced with the following sweeteners: dextrose, glucose or corn syrup, erythritol, isomalt, xylitol, maltitol, mannitol, sorbitol, lactitol, aspartame, acesulfame-K, saccharin, sucralose, and others.

3) Xylitol gum

It did not end with the appearance of sugar-free chewing gum on the market. More studies have been added that point out that not all sugar substitutes are optimal. Sugar-free gum began to feature substitute sweeteners or ingredients that were also not completely kosher. Xylitol has been found to be the best sweetener in chewing gum. Xylitol enhances the health benefits of chewing gum. The fact that the chewing gum contains the natural sweetener Xylitol is not a win. Most manufacturers add Xylitol to sugar-free gum, but they also add other artificial sweeteners and other controversial ingredients.

If you want to find Xylitol gum (healthy gum) that only contains Xylitol, you need to look and not settle for those off-the-shelf gums.

4) Healthy chewing gum

The last type of gum is healthy chewing gum. It is sugar-free xylitol chewing gum without controversial additives with a synthetic base or its purest form with a purely natural base. To give you an idea, here is a list of controversial ingredients that should not be included in chewing gum : artificial sweeteners – aspartame, acesulfame K, sorbitol; dyes – carminic acid, brilliant blue FCF, allura red AC; antioxidants BHA and BHT and titanium dioxide. Recently, Aspartame Free Chewing Gum has been sought after, as on 14/07/2023 aspartame was declared by the WHO as a potentially carcinogenic substance for humans.

Chewing gum has been with us for thousands of years and its benefits to the human body are obvious. We have forgotten the benefits of chewing gum, but that will change.
